Neil Druckmann: The Last of Us 3 May Never Be Released

There is a possibility that the The Last of Us series will end with The Last of Us Part II and will not continue. This was stated by Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann in an interview with Variety in anticipation of the upcoming premiere of HBO’s second season of The Last of Us.

When asked about the development of The Last of Us Part III, he urged fans not to expect such a game — the studio has not promised its release, and it is uncertain whether it will ever come out.

“I was waiting for this question… The only thing I can say is: don’t count on a continuation of The Last of Us. This might be the end,” he said.

Many fans were surprised by this response. Online discussions note that earlier comments from Druckmann had given more hope for the appearance of a sequel. In 2024, he mentioned that he had “found the concept for The Last of Us Part III.”

“I don’t have a story or plot yet, but there is a concept… one that I find as exciting as the ideas that formed The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, with a similar direction, but at the same time interesting on its own. So, I have this feeling that there might be one more chapter to this story,” said Neil Druckmann.

Currently, the developer is fully focused on creating Naughty Dog’s next big franchise — Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet.

Earlier, Sony canceled The Last of Us Online for PlayStation 5 after consultations between Naughty Dog and service experts from Bungie. This game was supposed to be the next in the series after The Last of Us Part II.
