The world’s most iconic spy is getting a bold new beginning.
IO Interactive, the studio best known for its acclaimed Hitman series, has officially lifted the curtain on 007 First Light, the long-anticipated James Bond game. Formerly known under the working title Project 007, this upcoming title marks the first major standalone Bond game in over a decade—and it’s not just another rehash of classic spy tales.
Instead, 007 First Light offers a wholly original story, exploring the early, formative years of James Bond before he earned his license to kill. Unlike previous Bond games that leaned heavily on film tie-ins or established character portrayals, this game features a brand-new actor and voice behind the role, separate from any cinematic version.
A Grounded Take on Bond’s Origins
Set in the late Cold War era, 007 First Light takes a darker and more grounded approach than many of its predecessors. While the game will still deliver the globe-trotting spectacle expected from the franchise, IO Interactive is placing heavy emphasis on character development, espionage, and player-driven decision-making.
Much like the Hitman reboot trilogy, First Light will feature open-ended missions with multiple ways to complete objectives—whether through stealth, diplomacy, or explosive action. But unlike Agent 47, this Bond is young, emotional, and far from invincible.
Powered by IOI’s Glacier Engine
Built on IOI’s proprietary Glacier engine, 007 First Light promises cinematic visuals, immersive environments, and complex NPC behavior systems. From shadowy MI6 training grounds to lavish European casinos and dense urban combat zones, the game is shaping up to be a technical showcase.
Initial footage shown during the teaser hints at a mix of stealth-based mechanics, hand-to-hand combat, and gadget use—along with signature moments like high-speed chases and tense one-on-one confrontations.
A Multi-Platform Release, Including Switch 2
In an exciting move for fans across platforms, 007 First Light will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a tailored version also confirmed for the newly released Nintendo Switch 2. While details on the Switch version’s performance are still under wraps, IOI has stated it is being developed natively rather than as a cloud port.
The game is expected to receive a full gameplay reveal during IOI’s dedicated showcase on June 6, 2025, as part of the broader Summer Game Fest lineup.
The Return of a Legend
It’s been over a decade since Bond headlined a major video game, with 2012’s 007 Legends receiving mixed reviews. IO Interactive’s pedigree in stealth-action design, combined with a fresh creative direction, has raised hopes that 007 First Light could finally give Bond the world-class gaming treatment he deserves.
